Pets rebel at Christmas, warning "we are not toys, don't give us away as presents"

  • This is the message that the new responsible animal adoption campaign promoted by the Health Department is trying to convey
  • The Councillor for Health (on the right) and the Department's technician presented the campaign to the media

The initiative will have visibility on posters, social networks and in the municipal media

"Dear Three Wise Men: Just like humans, I am a living being and my life expectancy can be up to 15 years. I need veterinary care, cuddles and love. I am not a toy that can be given away or even returned. So, for this Christmas, I am only asking one thing of you: if a family wants me, they should adopt me responsibly". This Christmas, you see, it is the pets who write the letter to Their Majesties making it clear that they are not a toy. "Our pets are writing to the Three Wise Men asking, if any family wants to adopt them, they should be aware of what it entails and, if a family is convinced that they can fulfil what it means to have an animal at home, they should not buy, but adopt them", highlighted the Mijas Town Hall Health Councillor, Mari Carmen González (Cs), this Monday, from the municipal Zoosanitary Centre.

Under a letter format, Health presented this campaign for responsible animal adoption, which is the continuation of another that has reached the schools of Mijas during this school term. "We have distributed audiovisual material, which has been made in collaboration with some veterinarians of the municipality; it is a video which explained to the children what it means to have a pet at home, what obligations, what their life span is; in short, the responsibility it entails, that it is not a toy".

Fortunately, more and more families are adopting pets. The municipal animal Health Centre already has 7,325 dogs and cats, which now have a home, care and affection. "If a family decides to comply with all that is involved in having an animal at home, they should come here, see all the pets and the professionals will explain all their needs in terms of health, food, adaptation to the family; the compensation they will receive will be priceless", concluded the Councillor.

The campaign will have visibility on posters, social networks and in the municipal media.
