Mijas is by the side of all victims of violence against women, as shown on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th (25N), placing a giant sign at the Town Hall building’s terrace and reading a manifesto, which climax was the unveiling of a sculpture resembling a giant ribbon at  San Valentín Square in Las Lagunas. “The sculpture is going to pay tribute, to each one of the victims of violence against women in our country. So far this year, 2021, 42 people – 37 women and five children – have been killed”, highlighted the Mayor, Josele González (PSOE). “This statue has been  placed in an área used by thousands of people every day, who will be able to see it and remember all those women, boys and girls”, said Natalia Martínez (PSOE), Councillor for Equality.

During open ceremony, members of the Popular University workshop offered a performance and the whole area was lit up in violet. Besides, a candle was lit for each one of those killed in 2021 and the Mayor´s House of La Cala was also lit up in violet. Representatives from women associations in Mijas participated in the ceremony, along with Councillors from the Mijas Local Council. The spokesperson from the (Cs) Municipal Group, José Carlos Martín, highlighted that “public administrations must set the example in this society’s fight against this type of violence that,day after day, keeps filling up news reports, and we must do so by promoting education”.

The Councillor from the PP party Carmen Márquez, who attended the events in the afternoon, highlighted the excellent work carried out by the Women Informative Centre and stood up for education and for all school centres, associations and municipalities to continue working as at present.

Those absent in the manifesto

For her part, the independent Councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, said that she, as well as the Mayor, was sorry to see some people absent from the reading of the manifesto. “Many people and politicians that should be committed to this fight”. The president of the Women Circle - Círculo de Mujeres - Casa Luna, Silvia Mengíbar, was very excited to be able to make more women “feel that they have the support” of society to get on in life. From Soroptimist, its president Laura Domínguez advocated for the prevention work with couples.
