Over 40% of women taken care of by the Women Centre were foreigners

A new meeting was held by the Viogenex group, which includes the Foreign Residents and Equality Departments of Mijas Town Hall, the Guardia Civil forces and the SIMA group of the Local Police, as well as the associations Age Care, La Cala Lions Club, Red Cross and Soroptimist International. “The main objective of this meeting is to continue working on cases of gender violence among the foreign population, discussing the new cases reported since our last meeting, monitoring the ones that were already known and discuss new initiatives and proposals” said Arancha López (Cs), Councillor of the Foreign Residents Department, who highlighted the excellent work carried out by all the associations included in the project.
The Councillor of the Equality and Diversity Department, Natalia Martínez (PSOE) highlighted that “over 40% of women taken care of by the Women Centre were foreigners, therefore we realize that this group is very important to coordinate our work, especially with Soroptimist, which is doing a commendable work taking care of and guiding these women”.
During the meeting, it was highlighted the increase in the number of gender violence cases during the summer. “Especially with women who were here spending some days on holidays, who were not residents, but that had to be taken care of effectively, probably feeling completely facing a situation like this”, said López, who added that “Viogenex responds effectively in order to provide early care and support”.
Regarding this data, Ángel Blanc, the officer of the SIMA group of the Local Police in Mijas, mentioned that “due to the increase in the population during the summer season, with tourists arriving at Mijas, there is also an increase in the number of cases” and insisted in the fact that there is an action protocol already established to take care of any victim. “A place to stay is located, while preparing the restraining order and legal action, necessities articles are provided and the Local Police and Guardia Civil take care of the victim’s protection and transport”.
