August, the month for the recovery of tourism

  • Mijas increases its hotel occupancy expectations in the month of August by more than 20 points compared to the initial forecasts
  • The plaza Virgen de la Peña, Mijas Pueblo

The forecast for occupancy in September exceeds 50% throughout the province

At the end of the first fortnight of August, the Tourism Department in Mijas took stock on Thursday the 19th of the hotel occupancy data that, a few weeks ago, was already forecast by the Association of Hotel Entrepreneurs of the Costa del Sol. In its forecasts, AEHCOS already positioned Mijas as the second municipality in Malaga with the best occupancy figures, with 77.2%, only behind Nerja, with 82%. The municipality thus exceeded the initial forecasts, which stood at 51.2%, by more than 20 points. In this regard, the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), added the fact that Mijas, unlike other municipalities, has all of its hotels open, and assured that the figures are very good “taking into account that except for two hotels, most of our establishments are far from the sea”. To this must be added the handicap, according to Martín, that “managing reliable data this season has been complicated to collect, since visitors after the pandemic make their reservations with very little time in advance”. “We are hopeful, we believe that this information is important because it means that there is activity, that we have tourists and we hope that, in the remainder of the month of August, our expectations will be met, and that it will be a strong month and we can keep our hotels open after September or October”, stated the councillor. In this regard, Martín explained that, although the figures are still far from those recorded before the pandemic, “we must keep in mind that we are seeing continuity in the arrival of tourists and that will make everything reactivate, not only the hotel industry, but also commerce and the catering sector”. Councillor Martín also highlighted the occupancy forecasts in September that, according to AEHCOS, will exceed 50% in the province and, in October, with a 42% estimate of reservations in hotel establishments. Regarding the profile of visitors, 68% are national tourists, a circumstance that, according to the head of Tourism, “has offset the drop in international guests”.   The Councillor for Tourism attributed these good forecasts to the joint work of Councils such as those of Beaches, Tourism, Festivities and Basic Income, with promotional campaigns that emphasize that Mijas is a safe municipality, with a consolidated programme of activities and “in which we carry out continuous work that, in the end, leads the tourist who may be having doubts about where to go, to opt for our municipality”.
