he Mijas Town Hall, through the Environment and Fire Departments, warns about the high risk of forest fires in the municipality due to the elevated temperatures forecast in the coming days due to the first heatwave this summer. A continuous rise in the maximum and minimum temperatures is expected that will extend practically throughout Spain and will last until Monday or Tuesday.
“With the heat wave arriving in the coming days, it is essential that we maximize all measures to avoid causing fires in our rural areas since the data tells us that 95% of forest fires are caused by the recklessness of human beings”, explained the councillor for the Environment, Arancha López (Cs). To avoid these, the councillor offered some recommendations to take into account since, in the south, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees, the day of greatest intensity will be Saturday 14th, when we could even see in some areas such as Córdoba or Seville, 44-46 degrees, the pieces of advice offered, among others, from this area are the following: avoid going for a walk in the central hours of the day, do not smoke and throw cigarette butts in rural areas, do not leave any type of glass residue that could cause the magnifying glass effect and start a fire, avoid using motor vehicles or machinery that can generate sparks and thus cause a fire.
On the other hand, the Mijas Firefighters coordinator, Francisco Mérida, added that "we have to avoid all negligent or dangerous behaviour in the mountains", since, as he stated, "the best way to stop and combat a forest fire is to prevent it from occurring”. In addition, he also recalled that “we are all responsible for our behaviour and the burning of stubble and the use of barbecues is prohibited from June 1st to October 15th in forest lands and areas of forest influence in the municipality due to the high fire risk”.
In case of sighting any smoke or suspecting any danger or emergency, remember, you must immediately notify 112.
