Environmental experts informed on the beach about how to conserve our marine flora and fauna

This summer, the Department for the Environment has promoted a campaign on the beach to make bathers aware of the importance of conserving the biodiversity that inhabits the rocky shores of Mijas. Unlike other years, in which specific activities were organised, this year users are informed daily that there are areas of our coastline that are under special conservation measures, protected by the European Union. Likewise, the experts insist on the importance of not removing such common marine species as limpets, sea urchins, or sea tomatoes, among others.

Antonio López is one of the environmental educators involved in this initiative: “In general, citizens understand and respect the recommendations that we offer, but there are those who answer that it makes no difference if they take some. The problem is that if, like him, many other people do the same thing, in the end, we will finally destroy the very important biodiversity that we have along the Mijas coast”, he explained.

The campaign took place this Monday at Cabo Rocoso, on El Bombo beach.
These experts cover the entire coastline, spending two days on each beach and emphasizing the protection of the rocky areas. “I think it's great that this type of campaigns are carried out, because many families, just for the fun of it, spend their time on the beach catching crabs or limpets with their rakes and nets, and I want to think that, due to ignorance, they do not realize what harm they are doing to our environment”, said Yolanda Gutiérrez, a beach-goer  on Cabo Rocoso, El Bombo beach, where the campaign took place on Monday.

For her part, the councillor for the Environment, Arancha López (Cs), also present, explained that this campaign began at the start of the summer season, coinciding with the nesting period of the black legged plover, and we did so to ensure that people would avoid going to the beach with their pets because, unintentionally, the animals could trample the nests and eggs of these highly protected birds”. Likewise, López stressed that "these informative rounds will take place until the end of summer to continue raising awareness among both the residents of Mijas and all those who visit us".
