The councillor for Beaches and Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), announced this week that Mijas is considered one of the municipalities most valued by people with reduced mobility to spend their holidays in Andalusia. This is reflected in the specialized portal 'tododisca.com' as well as in other travel websites. "One of the hallmarks in our government is the fight for the equality of our residents in all areas, so it is essential for this Local Council that people with reduced mobility can also enjoy the summer and bathe with all the facilities', the councillor pointed out.
Mijas has four adapted beaches with all kinds of equipment and services that have provided it with the 'Universal Accessibility' certification. La Luna- Royal Beach, El Bombo, La Cala and Riviera already have this distinctive feature that offers a leap in quality on the beaches of Mijas. "Residents and tourists with reduced mobility have at their disposal these adapted beaches that, in addition to providing all the necessary material for their stay and bathing, have at their service specialized lifeguards in each of these spaces to help them at all times both at sea with the amphibious chairs and in any circumstance that comes their way", assured Martín.
Added to this are the rest of the awards obtained on the Mijas coast, such as the 9 Q for Quality flags, the 3 blue flags, the ISO 14001, the centre and the blue path, as well as the security offered by the distinctive 'Andalusia Segura' seal and that of 'Safe Tourism Certified'. "It is not only about having accessible and safe beaches but also offering high quality", clarified the councillor.
Eradication of barriers
Martín, who is also responsible for Operative Services and Infrastructures & Works, commented that "the eradication of architectural barriers is a roadmap for this government, where these two areas also work on it every day". Municipal operators are in charge of adapting pavements, lowering steps, updating the slopes of the ramps, laying specialized tiles for people with visual impairment, not forgetting the smart pedestrian crossings and those adapted to citizens with the autism spectrum. In the same way, the Department for Works already takes into account the regulations in this regard in all new constructions that ensure that the rights of these residents and visitors are respected to facilitate their transit.
"Mijas is a municipality with a large geographical area and complicated orography. Even so, we work every day to eradicate these barriers and we are ensuring that large areas of our city are comfortable and practical for people with reduced mobility, whether they live here or if they are here on holiday", concluded the councillor.
