The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), valued last week the ranking presented by the renowned rural accommodation portal 'clubrural.com' that points to Mijas as one of the 20 rural coastal destinations preferred by users in Spain. “This is great news because we are awakening more and more public interest every day. In the province of Malaga we are the only ones that appear on this list, which places us at the national level at the head of this type of tourism so in demand after the pandemic. Our municipality has a wide offer and our great geographical extension also means that we do not suffer overcrowding on our beaches, mountains, nor in the activities we carry out, facts that travellers value, now more than ever”, said the mayor.
On his part, Martín recalled that "the department has worked hard to not only maintain an active and attractive offer adapted to new ways of travelling, but also to guarantee the safety of visitors". As an example, the councillor indicated measures such as those deployed on the coast where "three drones control the capacity that can be consulted on the municipal website as well as with sanitizing gel along the coast, controllers to monitor that the rules are respected with regard to security against the virus or the disinfection of the toilets on the beaches every time they are used”.
Both municipal leaders highlighted the latest tourist campaign launched by the Local Council based on nature and outdoor activities. “Mijas has seven main segments that are broken down in our 'Strategic Tourism Plan' but this time we wanted to delve into those that we consider can now help us more to attract visitors and that will give us strength to overcome the season and one of our main industries”, assured González.
Tourist offer of Mijas
Sun and beach, hiking routes through the mountains, the coastal path and golf become the main jewels this summer of 2021. “We are not leaving any segment behind, but we are promoting those that may now be more attractive to tourists. From the Council for Tourism we not only work in the short term, but also in the medium and long term, since we have to be prepared to recover the pre-pandemic data as soon as possible", said Martín who added in this regard that" the department already has a 'Golf Marketing Plan' to fight against seasonality in this sports sector, which helps to maintain visits during the low season in an open-air and safe environment, as well as working with international tour operators so that as soon as foreign tourism is normalized, we will already have carried out important promotions within the Asian market”.
Both the mayor and the deputy-mayor agreed that they are not triumphant with the good data regarding the city because "there is still a long way to go" although they did assure that "this type of news gives encouragement and strength on knowing that our work is well done”.
In this regard, it should also be noted that the municipality has grown 69 percent in searches on 'Booking' (one of the largest and busiest accommodation and travel websites in the world). "Mijas is on the map for all those who seek to spend a good holiday in peace and on this same line aiming to generate security and guarantees, we will continue working for the good of our business owners and residents", they conclude from the government team.
