On July 20th, 2021, the young man from Mijas Juan Antonio Gómez Alarcón disappeared in the Sierra de Mijas without leaving a trace. Last Tuesday, 11 years had passed since the mountaineer’s disappearance. More than a decade without knowing the whereabouts of the young man. To remember the joyful and adventurous spirit of this hiker from Mijas, his family organised an emotional event at the viewpoint that bears his name, and with the mountains as a backdrop, texts and songs were read and sung in his memory.
Friends of Juan Antonio, residents and members of the corporation attended the call of the family of this young local hiker, whose trail was lost in the mountains, interrupting since then the peace and happiness of those closest to him. “Like many other families in Spain, we have lived through hell since we were aware that Juan Antonio had disappeared. Despite the years that have passed, we continue to organise searches to try to locate him. We want to keep hope alive”, said Carmen Gómez, sister of the Mijas mountaineer.
Gómez indicated that she also continues to work to give greater visibility to the missing people in Spain. “We must continue to insist on investigations into many unknown situations  behind each case”, she added. The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), also present at this tribute, valued “the importance of developing this type of initiative, especially because family and friends find a way to let off steam, share memories and move on”. The viewpoint dedicated to Juan Antonio witnessed a very emotional afternoon, in which feelings of sadness, affection, longing, and trust were mixed… “Juan Antonio loved the mountains and had great respect for the environment. He represents many other missing persons in our country, who one day left and their whereabouts are still unknown”, said Carmen Márquez, councillor for the PP in Mijas. For her part, the councillor for Ciudadanos of the Local Council in Mijas, Mariló Olmedo, affirmed: “Juan Antonio is still in the hearts of many people of Mijas who do not forget him and who continue to support the family in everything they need, as does the Town Hall”. The non-attached councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, also agreed in this regard, and stressed that “this young man loved his village very much, and Mijas will also love him, now and forever”. The event was also attended by relatives of other missing persons in Spain, among these, the parents of Paco Molina, who disappeared in Córdoba in 2015 when he was only 16 years old. “We are here because I think it is important that we try to accompany each other and give each other support among the families, because we are very lacking in attention from the administrations. Although I have to admit that the Mijas Local Government is with Juan Antonio’s family, something that is appreciated”, concluded Isidro Molina, father of the young man missing from Cordoba.
