La Butibamba, the Water Park or the Virgen de la Peña square already have awnings to protect residents and visitors from the sun

The Mijas Town Hall continues with its plan to improve the municipality's playgrounds. After completely replacing and renewing the rubber flooring, and renewing the children's play areas, they are now promoting a new measure to provide more shade to these areas of the municipality through the placement of awnings. "Following the line of improvement of our parks, we have promoted a plan for shading structures, above all, prioritizing the coverage of play areas, also responding to a demand that local families sent us. These will allow the little ones to enjoy the parks without getting burnt, especially on summer days with high temperatures”, says the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).

La Butibamba park, in La Cala, the Sector 31 dog park, in Las Lagunas, the Water park in Las Cañadas, and on the Virgen de la Peña square in Mijas Village already have these structures that protect families from the sun and heat, having fun in the recreation areas and adding to the natural shade provided.

This project starts in 2021, but will continue over time throughout the municipality, they assure from the government team. In addition, the plan, promoted by the Parks and Gardens and Public Areas departments, also includes the shading of different streets of the municipality with more shops and visitors. “We are very satisfied with how the installation is being carried out and the work will possibly be completed next week. The objective is that this plan reaches 100% of the parks and that it extends the shading to more streets of La Cala, Las Lagunas, and Mijas Pueblo'', adds the councillor for Public Areas, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE).

Improvement plan

The placement of these awnings is to be added to other improvements that the Council has been promoting since 2020 with the Municipal Plan to Update Parks, which includes not only the renewal of the rubber flooring of these, but also the maintenance and conservation of the children's spaces of the municipality, both its play areas and the furniture in the garden areas.

“We have recently completed the rubber floor replacement work and the installation of a swing in the Valtocado playground. Last year a total of 16 parks were renewed and this year we are undertaking the improvements of those that were pending”, states the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Laura Moreno (PSOE), who recalled that the integral renovation is already planned for the children's playground at La Muralla in Mijas Pueblo, whose contract was formalised last June for a value of 153,000 euros, and the creation of two children's areas in El Esparragal (Las Lagunas) and Los Olivos (La Cala) for a value of 60,000 euros, as well as the fencing in of the El Barco park, on the Promenade in La Cala.

During these last two years, the Mijas Town Hall has fine-tuned the facilities of parks such as La Butibamba, María Zambrano, Fernán Caballero, Victoria Kent, El Limonar de La Cala or the Water Park and has inaugurated new leisure areas in the municipality, such as the Hipódromo park, with an area of more than 2,000 square metres.
