The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), presented on Wednesday morning the special security device of the Local Police Cycling Unit that will be in charge of ensuring safety on the municipality's beaches throughout the summer. “One more year we are launching this service, which throughout its history has obtained very good results, both when it comes to deterring any type of illegal and illicit activity that may be undertaken in the beach environment, as well as to act as liaison and support to any resident and visitor who needs it”, explains the mayor.
With 14 kilometres of coastline, the Mijas beaches gather every year thousands of residents and visitors from all over the world to enjoy a unique enclave that also has numerous quality certifications such as the ‘Q’ flags for tourist quality, blue flags, and the 'safe-tourist certified' stamp. "In addition to making a great effort in the first-aid and rescue work with a wide device, we believe it is essential to have security reinforcement thanks to the agents who will patrol each and every corner of our coastline”, explains González, who has wanted to underline how “in recent years we have managed to get illegal activities out of Mijas and make our beaches increasingly safer. The beaches of Mijas and the coastal environment have become benchmarks for safe spaces, where families feel at home and that for us, especially in this difficult tourist context, is the most important thing”.
More security
A couple of agents from the Cycling Unit will provide vigilance service every day, from 11 am to 7 pm, until the beginning of September. “We have been carrying out this initiative for six years and the theft rate is much lower than in other neighbouring municipalities. Simply the preventive work of being around here already deters those who want to commit illegal activities", says an agent in this unit, who has specified that "in addition to added security, we control that the beach ordinance is complied with and also some traffic issues such as loading and unloading and places for the disabled that give access to the beaches”.
Likewise, this unit serves as a link between residents and visitors with the Local Police for any type of incident or query that may arise: "We attend to any issue as, even though we are on the beach, we are police agents to all effects to resolve incidents of whatever type".
