Last Saturday afternoon, the courtyard of the Mijas Village Folk Museum hosted the presentation of the study "Monitoring of nocturnal birds in Mijas from 2005 to 2020". A treatise that has been developed by local biologist Franciso Fernández Gómez, in collaboration with other members of 'Ecologistas en Acción Mijas', and which proved to be very successful, filling the limited capacity in its entirety.
Fernández has developed this study for 16 years. A long period of hard work to get to know a little more about the fauna that live in our municipality and in it “the evolution over these 16 years of the population of nocturnal birds of prey and the different causes of, either its decrease, or its increase in numbers is collected depending on the species”, commented the Mijas biologist. This project is part of SEO Birdlife's Noctua programme, a study plan that was born in 1977 and is carried out throughout the entire Spanish geography, sharing data.
The presentation was developed complying with all the anti-COVID security measures. Susi Sánchez, a biologist who attended the presentation, clarified that “Mijas is one of the pioneer municipalities in the area in terms of environmental studies, with a group of very persevering local naturalists who work hard to protect the mountains, and who maintain constant connection with the people who work in the Town Hall”.
New acts
The group of Ecologists in Action Mijas, like everyone else, has seen its calendar of activities modified due to the pandemic, but little by little they are organising new events like this one. "This year we have not organised full days, like other years, with activities throughout the month of June, but we are going to arrange events like this one and next Thursday we will open an exhibition on diversity at the Cultural Centre in Las Lagunas”, said the coordinator of the group, Juan Alarcón.
