After 15 months without docking at the Port of Malaga, on Tuesday the first cruise ship arrived in the capital since the state of alarm was declared, along with the crisis caused by the mobility restrictions imposed by covid-19. The best news is that Mijas is, once again, one of the chosen excursions that the 'Mein Schiff 2', of the German shipping company TUI Cruises, offered upon arrival. The ship spent the day in Malaga and in the afternoon departed for Mallorca. Of the thirty buses with 700 passengers that departed on an excursion through the province of Malaga, three of them chose Mijas to spend the day, among other options such as Puerto Banús or Caminito del Rey.
From the Department for Tourism they are very optimistic with this arrival as “cruise passengers return to Mijas, as it is one of the few excursions that are offered. That means that we are working well as regards tourism, we convey that we are a safe destination, in addition to everything our town already offers”, said José Carlos Martín, Mijas Tourism councillor, who received the group made up of about 45 tourists . "The arrival of cruise ships gives us hope, and is an example that little by little tourist markets are opening up, and that activity is resumed, mainly in Mijas Village", added the councillor.
The tourism sector breathes a sigh of relief with the arrival of visitors. The councillor for Tourism, who personally welcomed the groups, concluded stating that “from here we thank all the tourists who have come to visit our municipality, for precisely having chosen Mijas. They will surely be very satisfied and very happy and will repeat, and if they do not repeat, we are sure they will transfer to their family, friends and closest circle that Mijas is a wonderful destination to visit and that, in addition, it is a safe destination and they will be able to come here with total peace of mind”.
Safe and open-air tourism
The Tourism delegation is also immersed, as well as in a campaign promoting outdoor segments such as sun and beach, hiking routes, the coastal path or golf, in a promotional action in Asia with tour operators related to this continent who are very inclined and faithful to visit Mijas. "We are not going to abandon any market or any segment. We are going to show ourselves as we are: a large municipality with a great offer for all audiences and all tastes, although we will emphasize those new preferences generated in our potential audience after covid", the councillor pointed out.
Likewise, according to the councillor, "other strong offers are promoted such as golf, which continue to be included in the Mijas road map as well as supporting the artisans and restaurants of the municipality". "We are not going to leave any 'mijeño' behind and, of course, the tourism sector that generates so many jobs is not going to be less. The 'COMETHA TURISMO' aid plan is already underway with 1.8 million euros and all the support of the local administration", concluded the councillor.
The Mijas Tourism Office highlights the dual function of this entity, “we work to promote the destination so that tourists come to our municipality, and when they are here, inform them personally and according to their needs, about the best offer for them. We have programmes for families, for the elderly, cultural outings, without forgetting the great shopping, gastronomic, and artisanal offer in which we are recently focusing much attention”, assured Juan Carlos Acevedo, director of the department.
