The objective of the Mijas Town Hall is to stimulate local commerce and promote tourism

Last weekend the summer craft market was inaugurated in La Cala de Mijas. There are a total of 21 stalls offering all kinds of articles: costume jewellery, decoration, textiles, hair braiding stalls, food, souvenirs, ceramic pieces, personalized fans, and so on. “It is a commitment of the Local Government in Mijas not only to boost commerce in the La Cala area and promote tourism, but also to provide an opportunity to this group that has been one of the most affected by the pandemic. Both these vendors and the fairground employees, for example, have spent practically a year without working", stated the councillor for Public Roads, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), who went on Saturday 5th to see how the first day of activity was progressing, accompanied by councillor Roy Pérez (PSOE).

This year the summer craft market is distributed in two locations: between the promenade (with 16 stalls) and the Branch Office Square in La Cala (with 5 stalls). "We have reduced the number of stalls on the promenade to ensure compliance with the required distance between each of them and avoid crowds", explained Cruz.

After more than a year of inactivity, those in charge of the stalls are optimistic about this summer season. "Let's see if we are lucky this year, because this is another attraction for tourists, and we will see if things are better this summer because we really need it", said Luciano Cadalso 'Vicent', who runs a stall selling oil paintings.

High expectations
"Facing this summer 2021 expectations are very high", said Cruz, after talking with the artisans. "They face the season with great enthusiasm, some sell in other markets and with this one we try to offer all available possibilities to those who visit us and also maximum opportunities to those who try to find a niche in the local economic market", added the councillor.

Damaris Ojeda, from Esencia Mediterránea, sells customised handmade fans. He is also a relative of the owner of the stall next to his, where little houses made of ceramic are sold, which attract a lot of attention. There is even a selection of small houses, typically seen in the Village. “The truth is that they have been in great demand. Previously, we used to make more fancy houses, but these little Mijas houses are the ones that we sell the most by far”, he explained. This summer market is an ideal place to buy a souvenir of the visit to the municipality or to find that different gift we are looking for at a very affordable price. “I make handmade jewellery, especially bracelets, for all ages and in many different styles. Here you can find that little present you are looking for and at very reasonable prices", explained Liana Popa, from the Liana’s Design firm, who assured that she is "very happy to be here again".

Opening hours

As for the opening hours of the market, these are quite flexible, assured councillor Cruz. On the promenade, the stalls will be set up from Monday to Friday from 5:00 pm to midnight and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 12 pm. In the case of the Branch Office Square, the stalls will be opened on weekends: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoons.
