The solidarity market set up by charity associations installed on the branch square in La Cala has held its twice-monthly event and in June it will say goodbye until after the summer. This weekend we met a new group that joins the initiative, Huella Felina Mijas, which has been working for more than 11 years. According to its president, Mariluz Delgado, “we have been taking care of cats that live on the streets for more than 11 years, giving them food, veterinary attention, caring for pregnant cats so that they can give birth in a safe environment… Since 2019 we have been established as an association and since then we have been working hard to help them”.
All seek the collaboration of residents and visitors to be able to maintain their activity and raise funds for their social work. "The pandemic has done a lot of damage as regards their solidarity work, because they cannot hold fundraising events, go out with their annual campaigns to ask for collaboration, or even open their headquarters to receive visits", they said from the Foreigners Department, which has led to this meeting place between solidarity associations and citizens, "so that they can inform about their work and also seek the collaboration of volunteers", said Laura Córdoba, technician of the municipal area.
These markets are held on the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month, in the morning from 11 am to 2 pm.
Animal protectors have a strong presence in the market and reporting about their activity is one of their main objectives. Ann Watkins, a volunteer for Animal Care Spain, said that her association “is in charge of collecting everything they can to be able to sell it and raise funds. They look after 350 dogs and more than 100 cats. This association is made up of very dedicated and committed people. For them, animals are the most important thing, they give so much love and they are the best of friends”.
Charity associations
At the moment, there are nine groups participating in the market, among them, The Lions Club, Donkey Dreamland, Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, Mijas La Cala Lions, Mijas Felina, Animal Care España, Huella Felina Mijas, Age Concern and Soroptimist. This last group celebrates, in its international scope, 100 years of work and 15 years since the creation of the Costa del Sol group. "Some of our most important programmes are those of attention to women victims of gender violence or a collaboration project with Venezuela", said Elisabeth Juliao, Soroptimist treasurer.
