Mijas Town Hall now has the complete plans for the future ‘El Burrito’ recreational park for donkeys, which is to be built on the town’s Vial Sur. The facility is designed to promote awareness, protection and conservation of this species, an icon of the municipality, and will provide sheltered accommodation for up to 48 animals. Oluz, the company awarded the project, has divided the site into two distinct plots: one for the care of the donkeys and the other for an interpretation centre.

The plot designated for the park and animal shelter is planned to include grazing and living areas, standard and veterinary shelters, quarantine and handling areas, paths and tracks, fencing, utility and waste management areas, and the facilities necessary for the welfare and care of the animals.

  • Las instalaciones comprenden una parcela destinada a refugio y atención de hasta 48 animales, por un lado, y un centro de interpretación, por otro.

On the second plot, the refurbishment of an existing building is planned for use as an interpretation centre serving cultural, educational and visitor reception purposes.

The area’s distinctive topography necessitates adapting each shelter to the terrain, with a functional layout of the enclosures. Wood, green roofs, earthy finishes and a staggered layout promote integration into the landscape, while natural ventilation, drained flooring, renewable bedding and group housing meet the animals’ needs for welfare, hygiene and management.

As outlined in the plans, a bedding layer suitable for equines, which is renewable and absorbent, will be laid over the base of each module, preventing the animals from resting directly on the concrete. This combination provides a stable and easily sanitised base, while offering a more comfortable resting surface that is gentler on joints and hooves.

Furthermore, the veterinary shelter has a larger floor area than the standard modules, allowing for the temporary accommodation of an animal requiring observation, rest or special care, and facilitating access for the staff responsible for its care.

  • Sobre la base de cada módulo, según se desprende del proyecto, se dispondrá una cama o capa superficial apta para équidos y renovable.

It was a requirement of Mijas Town Hall that the stables be of a size providing sufficient usable space to allow the animals to enter,  turn round, move and lie down without difficulty. Furthermore, each pen is fitted with a water point for a drinking trough and a light fitting, as well as rings on the walls to allow the animals to be tethered, thereby ensuring that maintenance and cleaning tasks can be carried out.

The Mijas donkeys will be able to ‘retire’ in the park, and adult animals can be taken in for rehabilitation and subsequent rehoming. The project, which is completed by a network of footpaths and recreational areas, will also allow the public to interact with the equines.
