The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, announced at the official ceremony on 12th October that the site is ideal due to its location and size

The Local Security Board of Mijas Town Hall will discuss, at its next meeting to be held shortly, the transfer of a municipal plot to the State for the construction of new Civil Guard barracks. The town’s mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), made the announcement on Sunday 12th during the official ceremony held at La Muralla to mark the feast day of the Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of the Civil Guard.

The mayoress explained that the location and size of the plot to be offered to the Civil Guard are ideal, as the road links to the main thoroughfares of the Costa del Sol are excellent; and the size, she noted, is suitable for providing the force with the necessary facilities.

Mata was accompanied by the lieutenant in charge of the main Civil Guard post in Mijas, Alberto Reyes; the first deputy mayor and councillor for Security, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), and the rest of the government team, as well as other civil, religious and military authorities. Regarding this proposal, Cuevas Dawson also remarked that “our officers deserve this new station, which will also have sufficient capacity to meet the municipality’s present and future needs”.

Needs

“Mijas has grown significantly in recent decades. We are now approaching 100,000 registered residents, and we all know that the actual population is much higher. Consequently, the need for services, protection, traffic control, and the monitoring of natural areas and our twelve kilometres of coastline has increased proportionally. We need more officers in green uniforms on our streets, on our roads, in our rural areas and along our coastline”, explained the mayoress.

Mata added that the main aim of this proposal is for the Ministry of the Interior to approve an increase in personnel in Mijas, “the third-largest municipality in the province by area, with a registered population of almost 100,000, which is actually much higher”.

The first deputy mayor also agreed on this point, emphasising that “the municipality has almost tripled its population over the last 30 years; it continues to grow, but we are still grappling with a long-standing shortage of material and human resources within the State Security Forces”, he stated.

Command Headquarters

The proposal to be discussed by the Local Security Board envisages that the new facility that the State must build will be able to serve the municipality over the next 30 years, during which time Mijas’ population is expected to double. In this regard, the mayoress reiterated to the Spanish Government that a greater allocation of officers and resources is essential “so that they can protect themselves and protect us”. This was also called for by the councillor for Security, who pointed out that “coordination with our Local Police is essential, but it cannot indefinitely make up for the lack of staff; therefore, both the Town Hall and Vox will continue to call on the Ministry of the Interior to fulfil its responsibilities. There is no room for further excuses or promises: we need investment, reinforcements and specific deadlines. Mijas cannot wait any longer”.

In her speech, which took place after the religious service, the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), also recognised the Armed Forces for their work, dedication and professionalism, “which are beyond doubt and a source of pride for us all, because they safeguard our security, our democracy and our well-being; because they are there whenever and wherever they are needed”.

Ceuta

Furthermore, Mata highlighted the “unacceptable situation” currently unfolding in Ceuta, “which leads us to mark Hispanic Day with indignation, because nothing that is happening in Ceuta is normal and it has become a situation that is impossible to come to terms with”.

The mayoress recalled that almost two and a half months have now passed since Ceuta was subjected to the illegal entry of more than 80,000 people. “We cannot act as if nothing is happening. We cannot normalise a situation that is anything but normal. If we forget about them, we will be complicit. If we accept their suffering, we will be complicit. If we normalise their lives, we will be complicit”, she said in her speech.
