El Torreón in La Cala will be the venue on 10th October for the second ‘Tango al aire libre’ event, a gathering that will bring together enthusiasts and the general public to enjoy music and dance in an open-air setting. The event will take place from 12:00 to 15:00 hours and will feature free, open admission.
The activity is organised in collaboration with the Mijas Tango and Dance Association. “People can come here whether they know how to dance or not. The point is to fall in love with the music, the embrace and improvised dancing”, explained María Shnaider, president of this association.
Tango will be the main feature during the day, although there will also be space for other musical styles such as salsa or merengue. “You have to dance it and feel it like a popular tango dance”, expressed Shnaider, who highlighted the open and participatory nature of the activity.

Culture in the Street
The event is part of Mijas Town Hall’s ‘Culture in the street’ programme, an initiative that seeks to bring cultural activities to public spaces in the municipality and encourage participation among residents and visitors.
“First of all, I would like to invite all Mijas residents, La Cala residents, and everyone visiting us during these days in the month of October to a folk dance exhibition, or rather cultural, from Argentina, with the Mijas Tango and Dance Association. They are doing a very interesting activity to raise awareness of this cultural initiative and, fundamentally, helping us with our ‘Culture in the street’ programme”, highlighted Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), councillor for Culture at Mijas Town Hall.
The councillor responsible for the department also highlighted the importance of taking culture out of closed spaces and bringing it closer to the public. “‘Culture in the Street’ represents bringing all cultural interests to the public, not only on closed stages, but making it participatory”, stated Maldonado.
In this way, tango goes out into the street to bring music and dance closer to residents and visitors in an event open to all audiences.
