The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), alongside the councillor from the government team, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), attended the handover ceremony on Thursday 24th September for the completion of the renovation works on the drinking water supply network in the Osunillas neighbourhood. This is a key project for improving the municipality’s water infrastructure, “which optimises the service for more than 400 residents”, the mayoress emphasised, adding that “the investment totalled 751,000 euros, with 130 household connections”.
The works, covering an area of 1,400 linear metres, involved the installation of a new supply network comprising ductile iron pipes with diameters of 200, 150 and 100 millimetres, to replace the previous fibre-cement and polyethylene network. The five-month completion deadline has been met, as work began last April.
The streets where work has taken place are Puerto El Pino, Puerto de la Media Luna, Puerto de los Pescadores, Puerto de las Grajas, Puerto de los Castillejos, Puerto de la Breña, Puerto Málaga and Pasaje Puerto Blanco, as detailed by the mayoress.
The work was carried out by Acosol, the public water company under the authority of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, funded by Mijas’s improvement levy. As reported by the mayoress alongside Acosol’s chief executive officer, Matilde Mancha, “the new supply network is now fully operational and runs underground beneath the carriageway alongside the kerbs”. In addition, 35 main network valves have been installed.
The mayoress noted that these measures “will represent a significant step forward in terms of sustainability, as they will contribute to a more efficient use of water, reducing leaks and frequent breakdowns in the existing network”.
42 new inspection chambers
Furthermore, as part of the same project, work has been carried out to improve the sewerage system, with the construction of 42 inspection chambers for an equal number of homes, at connection points encountered during the installation of the water supply network that previously lacked access points. The Tow Hall emphasised that these measures will facilitate future cleaning and maintenance work on the main sewerage network.
