On Friday 18th in the morning, the Andalusian Regional Government’s delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, chaired a working meeting with the heads of Environment and Beaches from the coastal municipalities of Málaga. Among them was the councillor for Beaches at Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). The aim of the meeting was to continue monitoring and controlling water quality, strengthening coordination, and creating a committee formed by municipal councils and the Regional Government.

“It was a very positive meeting that served to unify the criteria we must follow if spills occur, as has happned this year in several areas along the Málaga coast. We will therefore meet every two months to review progress. The most important thing is to have a joint protocol to follow in the event of any issues caused by spills”, explained Gómez Teruel after the meeting.
For her part, Navarro highlighted that this committee establishes a permanent roadmap between authorities with responsibilities for public health, water management, sanitation and beaches, aimed at sharing information and analysing the causes of potential pollution incidents in bathing areas to adopt preventive measures.
Beach closures
This summer, several spills led to the closure of some beaches in Málaga and Mijas and a swimming ban. According to the councillor, “Mijas acted quickly thanks to the work of Acosol and municipal services, significantly minimising the time the beach remained closed. . We didn't reopen until the daily testing came back clear and positive for swimming. We were able to resolve the issue in a day and a half. All of this was done with the constant goal of safeguarding bathers, local residents, and visitors”.

In addition, the Regional Government stated in a press release that the Department of Health and Consumer Affairs runs the Bathing Water Monitoring Programme from 1st June to 30th September, the bathing season. This includes regular controls at various points, such as taking and analysing samples, alongside visual inspections.
Currently, the regional authority has scheduled 75 sanitation and wastewater treatment projects in the province of Málaga, including the Comprehensive Sanitation of the Costa del Sol, which affects the municipality of Mijas.
