Mijas Town Hall is requesting that the validity of the 2027–2030 Beach Plan be extended from 8 to 11 months so that leisure and catering establishments can operate for almost the entire year. “This would improve services for residents and tourists, such as beach bars, sun loungers and parasols, massage tents and water sports areas, and would help reduce seasonal tourism in the municipality”, said the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP).
The proposal was put forward on Thursday 17th at a meeting between municipal representatives and business owners in the sector, prior to presenting the 2027–2030 Municipal Beach Plan to the Regional Government’s Ministry of the Environment, and following agreement with the sectors involved.

Gómez Teruel explained to business owners that “this proposal to extend the season from 8 to 11 months is a decision that does not oblige all businesses to remain open throughout that period. It is merely a maximum proposal that provides legal cover for those wishing to operate for eleven months (from February to December inclusive), but does not oblige them to do so. Business owners will therefore continue to decide how long to keep their businesses open”.
Service maintenance
Once presented and discussed with the sectors involved, the Beach Plan will be submitted to the Regional Government for renewal. This document maintains all current features: 26 plots for sun loungers and parasols; 17 ‘espeto’ sardine-skewer areas associated with beach bars; 14 massage tents; three terraces associated with restaurants; 17 public toilets; five beaches adapted for people with disabilities and reduced mobility; three water sports areas (one of which is municipal, on La Cala beach); and seven navigation channels (one of which is designated for kitesurfing at El Chaparral).
New features
The plan adds two further beach bar terraces to bring existing operations into line with the regulations of the Directorate-General for Coasts, which requires authorisation for these businesses to be included in the new text.

At the meeting, in response to questions from business owners, Gómez Teruel explained several changes to the beach area, such as the new location of the trampolines, which will move from El Torreón square to the boat playground to clear access to La Cala beach.
Beach Plan
This is a planning document which includes, among many other aspects, beach concessions, such as demountable facilities. It is accompanied by a document on beach cleaning and maintenance, a report on the storms that affected the coastline last summer, a report on the problem of seaweed arrivals, the safety plan, etc. “This is a fairly comprehensive document setting out an overall planning for all aspects of a municipality’s beach services”, said Francis Pérez, a municipal officer.
The deadline agreed between representatives of the Beaches Department and business owners for reviewing and reaching consensus on the text of the 2027–2030 Beaches Plan will be short. On 30th September, it will be submitted to the Regional Government of Andalusia.
The representative of the Mijas Beach Business Association, Carlos Morales, stated that “this document will provide us business owners with the certainty we need to invest in and improve our facilities and the services we provide, without running into legal problems. It is essential for the sector. It gives us great peace of mind that the plan will be approved by the Town Hall, the Regional Government and the Coastal Authority, as we have been dealing with beach regulation issues for many years”.
