Mijas Town Hall began work on Monday 7th September on the comprehensive renovation of the water supply in the El Coto residential area. This project involves an investment of 362,000 euros to replace the existing fibre-cement pipes with ductile iron ones, which are safer and have a larger diameter and, therefore, greater capacity. This was announced by the councillor for Infrastructure and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), who explained that the works will take place on “several major streets which had a very old fibre-cement water supply system, which is now completely outdated, with frequent faults and water cuts; the Town Hall has therefore decided to replace it with ductile iron pipes”.
Specifically, work will take place on Rebeco, El Corzo, Codornices and Urogallos streets, where work has already begun. The execution period will be three months, the councillor added, noting that a meeting will be held next Wednesday with the residents’ association and the company awarded the contract, VGC Global, to inform residents of all the details of the intervention.
The renewal will have an impact on fundamental aspects for residents, such as improved security of supply, greater inherent resistance to internal pressures and thermal changes, optimal use of available resources, and exhaustive monitoring of the quality of the water supplied.

The existing fibre-cement pipes will give way to a new ductile iron network with diameters of 100 and 150 millimetres. Work will also involve trench digging and backfilling, laying new pipes, replacing service connections and installing valves on branch lines. This will result in the complete renewal of this whole sector, eliminating current breakdowns and water losses and, consequently, improving the water pressure reaching homes in the neighbourhood.
The network has a length of 1,609.89 linear metres, and the route has been chosen specifically to minimise water losses and pipe crossings. Torres Trella added that 104 domestic service connections will be installed in accordance with the regulations for the end-user supply of drinking water set by Acosol, the public company under the authority of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol.
Work in Doña Pilar
In addition to the work that began on Monday, the company VGC Global will also soon be carrying out work in the Doña Pilar residential area, on a similar project that will involve work on Hernán Cortés, Alejandro Malaspina, Francisco Pizarro, Fernando de Magallanes, Juan Sebastián Elcano and Pedro Valdivia streets. According to the councillor, the works in both residential areas will be simultaneous. In the case of Doña Pilar, the network route measures 1,377.35 linear metres and 68 domestic connections will be installed. The budget for this project, according to Torres Trella, amounts to 281,000 euros; therefore, the total cost of both projects is approximately 643,000 euros.

Water levy
In addition to these two projects, the councillor announced that the Town Hall is set to approve, at a meeting of the Local Government Board, a project funded through Acosol’s water levy for the comprehensive refurbishment of the water supply systems in both the El Coto and La Sierrezuela residential areas. “We are now talking about a much larger-scale project, which in this case will be funded through the Acosol water levy. Drafting of the project will begin shortly, and we hope to start execution of the works next year”, concluded the councillor.
