The Mijas Town Hall has updated its contract to monitor water quality in streams flowing into the sea, as well as beach sand, to ensure the health and safety of bathers during the summer. This was confirmed on Tuesday 14th by the councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), who emphasised that “Mijas is a tourist destination with large numbers of people during the summer, and we must guarantee everyone’s safety through our department”.

This service complements the testing carried out by the Andalusian Regional Government on coastal bathing waters. Furthermore, the contract provides for the regular testing of beach sand.

According to Cortés, “we have to guarantee not only the quality of the seawater, but also the water that flows in via the streams. This allows us to prevent any potential discharges they might carry”.

The contract, which covers the summer period, began in June and will remain in force until the end of September. It has a duration of two years, with the option of an extension, and an approximate annual budget of 11,000 euros. The contracted company carries out tests on a fortnightly basis.

So far, the analyses carried out “have been favourable”, said Cortés. Detecting any negative results would help identify potential discharges, which, as the councillor pointed out, are illegal and can lead to fines or even be classified as an environmental crime. “For the time being, the results are positive, and we have a beach clean-up and collection team in place”, concluded the councillor.
