Mourning and solidarity came together on Thursday 2nd at the Inmaculada Concepción Parish. The Mijas community gathered to celebrate a Mass in memory of the thousands of victims left in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), led the institutional support for the affected families. “We have stood by Venezuela from the very start and have been trying to help a country that was already suffering a tragic situation”, said the mayoress.

Faced with the desolation of the exiles, Mata called for “financial aid to be channelled through organisations that are already working on the ground and have extensive experience, such as Caritas.” The mayoress also expressed her hope for those missing.

For her part, Reymar Lunar, president of the Piache Venezuela Association in Mijas, detailed the tremendous efforts of her operational network, comprising 136 medical specialists and over 120 volunteers in Venezuela. Another group of volunteers is also based here in the municipality. “International aid has been tremendous. The medical teams are attending to the area as best they can with the resources they possess. However, no amount of help is enough; there are thousands of injured people,” said Lunar.

During the ceremony, offerings, liturgical hymns and words of support were presented at the church altar. Father Hermán Marcel Lunar, parish priest of Mijas Pueblo and a Venezuelan citizen by birth, acknowledged the immense psychological impact of the disaster. “It only takes one of our brothers to be going through a hard time for prayer to spring up spontaneously”, he confessed. His closing words reflected sincere gratitude towards the residents of the municipality.
