Biomedical scientist Carlos Huesa Berral named Adoptive Son of Mijas

It was an emotional day for biomedical scientist Carlos Huesa Berral and his family, who were present at the plenary session held on Tuesday 23rd, after he was named an Adoptive Son of Mijas. The distinction, proposed by the Mayor’s Office, recognises his professional career and his maternal roots in the town. A graduate in Health Engineering from the University of Málaga (UMA) and holder of a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Navarra, he also received a fellowship from the American Cancer Society, where he is working on a project focusing on liver tumours.

“Carlos is one of our own and we are very proud of him; he also embodies the kind of hopeful youth that society wants to encounter along the way, and he has all the qualities needed to put an end to a dreadful disease like cancer, bringing that day ever closer”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), during her speech, emphasising that “he is also a role model for other young people”.

For his part, the PP spokesperson, Mario Bravo, recalled that “in accordance with the Mijas Town Hall’s 2012 Regulations on Distinctions and Honours, we wish to make a special mention of someone who, although not born here, was baptised in Mijas and deserves to bear the name of ‘Mijeño’ with pride wherever he goes”.

The Vox spokesperson, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, highlighted his professional career: “We are talking about a person with an extraordinary scientific track record, developed at some of the world’s most prestigious research centres, and who is contributing through his work to advances in treatment that can improve the lives of thousands of people”.

The spokesperson for Por Mi Pueblo, Juan Carlos Maldonado, said: “He brings hope, not only in the fight against a scourge on our society such as cancer, but also because society produces people of such great stature as he is”.

Speaking from the opposition benches, the Socialist councillor Josele González, addressed the scientist’s family: “Please know that you are fortunate to have a family member who inspires others, a person who, in a very short time, has become a role model”.

The Cs spokesperson, José Carlos Martín, praised the professional and personal qualities of the honouree “for his influence and the fight he is waging, and, above all, for what he represents for Mijas in having people of such kindness, professionalism and ability”.

An award-winning researcher

A graduate in Health Engineering from the University of Malaga (UMA) and holder of a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Navarra, Carlos Huesa was awarded a fellowship in 2024 by the American Cancer Society to work in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital on a project focusing on liver tumours. In July 2025, Huesa was received by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), at the town hall, where he signed the Town Hall’s Book of Honour. In February of last year, he also received the Andalusian Flag for Research, Science and Health, awarded by the Regional Government and the Provincial Council.
