The Mijas Town Hall, through its Family and Equal Opportunities department, is to organise a series of family scavenger hunts aimed at promoting co-responsibility and breaking down gender stereotypes.

This was announced on Tuesday 16th by the mayoress and head of the department, Ana Mata (PP), who explained that these family events will take place in the municipality’s three main centres: at Victoria Kent Park in Las Lagunas on the 20th, at La Muralla in Mijas Pueblo on the 21st, and at La Butibamba Park on the 26th. All events will begin at 19:00 and no prior registration is required to take part.

The aim of the initiative, launched under the name ‘A Summer Without Violence: Family Scavenger Hunt for Mutual Respect and Co-responsibility’, is to promote equality between men and women in the domestic and caring spheres, “focusing on non-violence within the family, non-violence between partners, and the co-responsibility that each of us must take on when living as a couple”, said the mayoress, who added that “the important thing about the game is that we compete with one another but in a spirit of helping each other, focusing on adding rather than taking away, and each of us taking on that co-responsibility we have within the family”.

And all of this, as Mata explained, is approached from a participatory, educational and community-based perspective that fosters shared family responsibility and work-life balance, promoting a balanced sharing of domestic and care tasks among all members of the household, with a particular focus on preventing gender roles and stereotypes from an early age.

According to María José Moreno, an adviser at the Women’s Centre, this campaign is driven, above all, “to prevent gender-based violence, which tends to spike during the summer and the holidays. We have therefore organised this fun activity in which we want the whole family to get involved: mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and young people”.

Games

The activity will consist of a family scavenger hunt lasting a minimum of 2.5 hours and a maximum of 4 hours. It will comprise five different game stations, at which families must complete challenges relating to co-responsibility, the division of domestic tasks, caregiving, the elimination of gender stereotypes and the balanced organisation of family life.

The activity will be organised into family groups or mixed teams that will rotate through the different stages, combining cooperative play, family reflection exercises, challenge-solving and teamwork.
