The proliferation of Asian seaweed along the Andalusian coast, particularly on the Mijas coastline, is a cause for concern for the Town Hall. In this regard, on Thursday 30th the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), once again called on the central government, from El Bombo beach, to adopt urgent measures to remove this invasive species from the beaches of Mijas. The councillor is calling for “measures to be taken that can genuinely alleviate this problem so that public administrations do not have to continue suffering, as it entails an extraordinary expense that is often very difficult for a local council to bear".
This invasive seaweed washes up in large masses on the beaches, where it decomposes, potentially providing favourable conditions for the breeding of certain mosquitoes. According to Gómez Teruel, “the lack of hygiene caused by foul odours and the appearance of very annoying mosquitoes is now a health issue. We want action to be taken as soon as possible, as the problem, far from improving, is getting worse, because this seaweed appears practically overnight".

Demand
The origin of this claim dates back to 25 September 2025, when a motion was passed in plenary session urging the Spanish Government to act urgently. It warned of the health risks and the potential environmental offence arising from the spread of this seaweed, which, according to Gómez Teruel, is already affecting not only Andalusia but a large part of the Spanish coastline.
The Beaches Department insists that the situation has exceeded its respond capacity. “I would like to remind you that last year we allocated 1.2 million euros to resolve this issue and keep our beaches in perfect condition. It is almost May and we still have these mats of seaweed, so we are once again asking the State to listen to us, to please take action on this matter, which is a problem affecting the entire Spanish coastline and is a serious issue”, concluded the councillor.
