The Mijas Town Hall is currently carrying out maintenance work in the Sierra de Mijas with the aim of preventing forest fires during the most dangerous period, which is about to begin. These works are being conducted under a contract awarded to the company EULEN, which will reach a total of 1,217,715.12 euros if the planned extension until 2029 is fulfilled.

The councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), visited one of the intervention zones last Friday 27th, specifically the Becerril stream in Puerto de la Gitana. For Cortés, “we are celebrating that work has now begun on this pioneering contract launched by the Mijas Town Hall. It is pioneering because it is the first time that a local ouncil has taken the initiative to carry out fire prevention work on public woodland”.
Workers are currently on site to minimise the risks that overgrown vegetation may pose during the period of heat, low humidity and high temperatures that begins in spring and extends throughout the summer. “We know that Mijas has been ravaged by many fires in the past; in fact, we are in an area that was already devastated by fire a few years ago and which we must preserve and look after”, the councillor explained.
For his part, the Business Development Manager of the Eulen Group, Ramón Ferreiro, stated that “it is an honour for us to be involved in this project, because in a way it is a pioneering project. It is the first time that public woodlands are being maintained through a local town hall. We are delighted to be able to collaborate with the Mijas Town Hall”.
Improvements
Regarding the works covered by the contract with EULEN, key activities include silvicultural treatments, clearing through brush-cutting, thinning and selective felling, pruning, the removal of invasive species, reforestation, and the conservation, maintenance, and improvement of forestry infrastructure.
Those responsible for the work, as stipulated in the contract, must be senior engineers and technical forestry engineers, each with more than five years of experience; they must be accompanied by a forestry foreman with over five years of experience who holds a qualification as a senior technician in the management and organisation of natural and landscape resources.

All work must be carried out between the 1st of October and the 31st of May, which is the period authorised by the Regional Government of Andalusia. It is worth noting that Mijas is the only municipality in the province of Málaga that supplements the actions implemented by the regional administration using its own resources.
Conservation of the environment
During the execution of the works, it will not be permitted to cut, uproot, prune or damage any flora species included in the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species, nor those in the Andalusian catalogue, nor those listed in Annex V of Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and the Biodiversity regarding Animal and Plant Species of Community Interest that require strict protection.

If any plant species listed in the documents are found, prior authorisation must be sought from the Regional Government of Andalusia for any proposed action. With regard to the management of any plant waste generated, the contract stipulates that it must be removed or disposed of by shredding, chipping or transport to an authorised disposal site as soon as possible.
