The mayoress of Mijas and head of the Family and Equal Opportunities Department, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Monday 2nd the schedule of activities planned to commemorate International Women’s Day, which takes place on the 8th of March. Workshops, talks and a poetry recital form the core of this programme, which began on Monday.
During the presentation, the mayoress stressed that “from this Town Hall and from this department, we continue to work to highlight equal opportunities between men and women. It is true that we have made very important strides throughout history in Spain, but that does not mean that we have achieved everything”.
In putting together the programme of activities, “we have had the collaboration of the women’s associations in the municipality, they are always there and form part of the soul of Mijas. They have gone out of their way to make these activities as attractive as possible, and I am very grateful to them for that”, said the mayoress.
The highlight of the week will be on the 6th of March, with the 18th ‘Mijas en Femenino’ gala held at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas, starting at 19 hours. Admission to the theatre is free and to facilitate access, the Town Hall will provide a bus service departing from the Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo and from La Cala (Bulevar, 45) at 18:15 hours.
The celebrations will culminate on the 8th of March with an exhibition and tai chi classes in the Grand Park. UP professor Rosa Martín will lead the activity, which will begin on Sunday 8th at 11 hours.
Women and organisations that have excelled in different fields, social, educational, cultural, business and sports, and who champion the fight for equality in the municipality will be recognised at this event, which has become a local tradition in the municipality.
“These are women are examples of hard work, perseverance and the fight to break down barriers. At the Mijas Town Hall, we highlight the role of women and their ability to occupy spaces on equal terms with men”, explained the mayoress.
