The Mijas Fire Brigade extinguished a fire that broke out on Wednesday morning on a plot of land next to the Las Lagunas fairground. According to Antonio Guerrero, deputy inspector of the Mijas Local Police, "the fire started at around 9:05 hours in an abandoned motorhome with foreign number plates and spread to a bus that had also been parked in the area for some time, also affecting a trailer and a car".
During the firefighting operation, there were several explosions due to the presence of a camping gas cylinder inside the motorhome, according to Miguel Ángel Castillo, head of the Mijas Fire Brigade, who added that the work focused "on protecting the trailer, because when we arrived there was a lot of fire, the motorhome was already fully ablaze and had caught part of the bus".
The incident coincided with the start of the school day at the two nearby schools, so authorities advised the headteachers of both schools to close the classroom windows to prevent the students from inhaling smoke.
The fire was extinguished at around 10 hours. Three crews from the Mijas Fire Department with two fire engines, along with four from the Local Police and the Civil Guard, who will carry out an investigation into the incident, participated in the response. Fortunately, no personal injuries were reported.
The plot of land where the fire occurred is privately owned. It should be noted that there is no specific prohibition on parking motorhome-type vehicles in the municipality of Mijas, so the vehicle involved was legally parked.
