The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), took part in the ‘Forum of Mayors and Innovation. Meeting of Urban Leaders’, held as part of ‘Greencities, Urban Intelligence & Smart Mobility’, which took place in Malaga city. The aim of the event is to address the challenges of the urban agenda from a sustainable and technological perspective.

The forum’s main figures were the mayors of Madrid and Malaga, José Luis Martínez Almeida and Francisco de la Torre, respectively, along with 45 other mayors.

The event, which focused on sustainability in municipal policies, featured interventions from architect, professor, and director of Arquitectura Viva, Luis Fernández-Galiano, as well as Raquel Mur, Head of Operations at Amazon Spain, who highlighted the four key pillars of the city of the future: sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent.

  • La cita contó con más de 45 regidores de todos los puntos del país. |

“Mijas is a green and smart city, fully committed to the 2030 Agenda. For this reason, participating in panels like this is essential, as it allows us to share experiences with other cities on innovative and sustainable policies”, explained the mayoress.

Technical panel

Meanwhile, the councillor for Urban Mobility at the Mijas Town Hall, Marco Cortés (PP), also took part in a technical panel on smart and sustainable cities.

  • El foro tuvo como protagonistas a los alcaldes de Madrid y Málaga, José Luis Martínez Almeida y Francisco de la Torre, respectivamente. |

The meeting aimed to provide a space for technical exchange between cities belonging to the RECI (Network of Intelligent Cities) and Innpulso networks, focused on sharing experiences, methodologies, and projects around two key strategic areas: experimentation spaces and shared data.

The programme, featuring more than 150 experts, focused on some of the challenges shaping the urban agenda. Key topics included the roadmap towards zero waste, tourism innovation, electric and connected mobility, the evolution of smart cities, efficient lighting, as well as blue territories and the marine economy.

Mobility Plan

In this context, the councillor recalled that the Town Hall is working on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), which is now in its final drafting stage after completing the analysis and citizen participation phases. Only the final review remains before implementation. In fact, Mata highlighted that "the technicians and the responsible department are already working on it, taking note of what we need to implement in Mijas for this plan, which is currently being drafted and will soon become a reality. The plan will include an analysis and diagnosis of everything we can put into operation in Mijas”.

The plan is a strategic document that sets out a series of measures and actions to improve transport in the city, prioritising walking, cycling, and public transport over private vehicles. Its goal is to achieve efficient, safe, accessible, and inclusive mobility that reduces emissions, improves air quality, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and enhances citizens’ quality of life, while balancing economic development with respect for the environment.

In the case of Mijas, the current situation of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic has been studied to develop short- and medium-term measures that ensure adequate and sustainable mobility, allowing pedestrians and vehicles to coexist safely and harmoniously
