More than 1,900 patients with advanced diseases were cared for by Cudeca in 2024

In its traditional annual assessment, the group also acknowledged the work of one of its volunteers, Cindy Jones, and the support of the Unicaja Foundation

As it does every year, the Cudeca Foundation took stock of its work during the past 2024, in a ceremony attended by provincial and municipal authorities, collaborators and volunteers of the collective. Cudeca's manager and medical director, Marisa Martín, gave the most relevant figures on the service provided by the foundation.

To begin with, Martín pointed out that more than 1,900 patients with cancer and other advanced diseases were attended to last year, "we are talking about an average of almost 113 patients every month, that is a very big challenge for the teams and a large team of professionals and volunteers are involved in this challenge, without forgetting the support that the families of these people also had".

During 2024, the Cudeca manager continued, each patient received an average of 18 interventions, mainly consultations and home visits. As for home care, Martín pointed out that this year it has been necessary to increase the number of teams dedicated to this purpose from six to nine, "teams that go to the patients’ homes, attend to them, assess whether they need psychologists, social workers, volunteers to accompany them... for each patient there is a wheel that has to be set in motion in time and quality".

Another positive aspect that Cudeca's medical director also highlighted was that more than half of the patients in palliative care could stay until the end of their lives at home instead of in the inpatient unit. "Professor Ramón Valles said that palliative care helped to live to the end and to die in peace, and that is our challenge every day, and we often succeed", she said.

Next, the financial director of the Cudeca Foundation, Rafael Olalla, made a financial assessment, underlining that the expenditure of the services offered by Cudeca reached 7.4 million euros in 2024, while the income, close to 7.9 million euros, was obtained through charity shops, donations and inheritances, for the most part, "followed by the contributions made by the Andalusian Health Service for the referrals they make of their patients, membership fees and charity events".

This event also served to recognise the work of one of its volunteers, Cindy Jones, and the support of the Unicaja Foundation. It was a day, in general, of gratitude to the whole Cudeca family, "also to those 1,101 volunteers who collaborated with us over the past year, especially in charity shops, events and accompaniment tasks, among others", recalled Marisa Martín.

The councillor for Social Inclusion of the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), also thanked "all the volunteers and all the professionals who attend to the patients, contributing their experience and training. They all do a great job for this foundation, which is very important on the Costa del Sol and the rest of the province, and which helps many users in Mijas".

Francisco José Martín, the deputy for the Third Sector of the Malaga Provincial Council, also joined in the thanks, pointing out that "I am very familiar with the work carried out by Cudeca, which began with a small shop in Fuengirola and has now become an essential and indispensable group throughout the province".
