Proud of their roots, their accent, their land... The elderly in Mijas celebrated last Friday 28th of February the Day of Andalucia with the traditional Andalusian breakfast organised by the Senior Citizens Department of the Mijas Town Hall. Bread and olive oil was served in the centres of active participation in Mijas Pueblo and Las Lagunas and in the Senior Citizens Centre in La Cala and a festive atmosphere reigned throughout the day.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and several councillors from the government team, including the councillor for the Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), and the councillor Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), enjoyed this day of coexistence with the elderly. From Las Lagunas, the mayoress said that "it is a day to share, to enjoy traditions and to celebrate together that we are in the best region in the world".
"We are celebrating the day of all Andalusians, the Day of Andalusia, and what better way to celebrate it than in the company of our elders. We are celebrating the day in the three senior citizens‘ centres with this typical Andalusian breakfast and, above all, enjoying a day of coexsistence with them", said Marín.
Tradition and good company, in Mijas Pueblo
Many elderly usually come to the senior citizens' centres for breakfast in search of company, because many of them live alone. "But today's breakfast is special. It's Andalusia Day and we have to celebrate it", said Antonia Tamayo, who had breakfast as she does every day with her group of friends in Mijas Pueblo.
"Breakfast is very good and sharing it is the nicest thing in the world", added María Cuesta. "We are very well and the elderly who come every morning are also very cheerful today, as always", said one of the waiters, Gleison Enrique, who was in charge of serving breakfast.
"We are very proud of what has been achieved over the years and, therefore, today is a very important day and we celebrate it, among other things, in the centres for active participation with the typical Andalusian breakfast, bread with oil", said the councillor of the government team Mario Bravo (PP), who was in Mijas Pueblo together with the councillors Mari Francis Alarcón (PP) and Lourdes Burgos (PP).

Singing, dancing and a lot of joy in Las Lagunas
A good atmosphere reigned in Las Lagunas throughout the morning. "We are great, having a good time with friends and commemorating the Day of Andalusia, which is a tradition that should last forever, because it started in the 80s and it should continue like this because it is a very special day here in Andalusia", said a neighbour who shared a table with three other friends. "I love the Day of Andalusia, I get a little something in my body that I can't explain and not to brag, but Andalusia is the best place. The breakfast is delicious and I am delighted to live in Mijas", said another neighbour.
For the occasion, the senior citizens' dance group led by María José Bueno performed, showing their art and sympathy on the stage. The councillors and the mayoress herself were also encouraged to dance rumbas and sevillanas. One of the dancers, Felipe, said that for him, being Andalusian "is the greatest thing in the world. I have been to Germany and other places on holiday, but I am proud to be Andalusian and Cordovan, both", he said.
In Las Lagunas, a group of seniors even dedicated some 'chirigotas' to the mayoress and the councillors. "Here, the good atmosphere doesn't let up even with the rain forecast", said Ana Mata, who thanked the gesture of the elderly who, once again, showed that at their age the most important thing is to enjoy life while you can.

Joy and Andalusian pride, in La Cala
In La Cala, the elderly also enjoyed their Andalusian breakfast. There, Andalusians by birth and Andalusians by choice mixed together. "My father was from Granada and emigrated to Argentina and now I am here in Andalusia", said Eduardo Muñoz, an Argentinean who lives in La Cala de Mijas. As for what it is about the Andalusians that people like so much, he said: "Joy is what they have. The Andalusian is cheerful by nature, it comes from inside their heart".
