This is an initiative that will take place over several weeks at the Manuel España Theatre

On Saturday 25th the second of the five workshops of the ‘Laboratorio Flamenco’ series was held at the Manuel España Theatre. On this occasion, the class, given by the choreographer Virginia Martín, was about movement, dealing with the differences between beats by means of hand clapping.

This is an initiative set up by the Department of Culture in Mijas, which seeks to connect emotion and movement and in which ten people are taking part. "With ‘A compás del movimiento’ they have learnt a little bit of the palmas (hand clapping), the way of walking and the nature of each of the flamenco 'palos' (styles), taking us to that emotion. In its history and origin, each 'palo' has its own characteristics and from there we have been working on emotions", explained the choreographer and teacher Virginia Martín.

During the two sessions, held on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th, they also learnt some of the most important characteristics of the 'soleá' and tangos, something that makes this workshop a great opportunity to learn about this art. "This has been a very nice project for the team to work on the technique and everything that flamenco has, but at the same time being an internal work that can be expressed and externalised", said Martín. One of the students, María José Llera, said that "for me it's a personal challenge because it's my first time dancing flamenco, so I've gone with the flow and as Virginia transmits such beautiful emotions it's very easy to flow. I don't know the technique, but the emotion and the desire, I have it".

Upcoming events
The next workshop, the third in the series, will be held on the 8th and 9th of February, and will mainly deal with the interpretation of flamenco dance through feelings. Two weeks later, on the 22nd and 23rd of February, 'Nuevo flamenco. De la tradición a la vanguardia, fandango y electro' (New flamenco. From tradition to the avant-garde, fandango and electro) and, finally, 'Creación coreográfica. Flamenco experimental, laboratorio’ (Choreographic creation. Flamenco experimental, laboratory", on the 8th and 9th of March.
