Mijas managed to reduce by up to 2% the amount of urban waste generated in 2024, while increasing the amount of recyclable waste: packaging, paper-cardboard and glass. In total, it generated 45,801 tonnes of waste in 2024, compared to 46,883 tonnes in 2023. The month with the highest collection volume was August, with 4,398 tonnes. The rate of waste generated per inhabitant per day was 1.3 kilos, compared to 1.4 kilos the previous year.

As for the collection of light packaging, the figures show an increase of 3% compared to 2023. In 2024, 2,452 tonnes arrived at the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex from Mijas, compared to 2,375 tonnes the previous year. August was the month with the highest volume, with 294 tonnes of packaging collected, similar to the same month in 2023. The rate of light packaging per inhabitant per year in Mijas was 26 kilos.

The blue container, for paper and cardboard, received more than 1,981 tonnes in 2024, 9% more than in 2023 when 1,818 tonnes were collected. The month with the highest volume of paper collection was July with 187 tonnes. The residents of Mijas generated an average of 21 kilos of paper-cardboard per year, one kilo more than the previous year.

In relation to the green container, in which glass is dumped, a total of 2,709 tonnes were collected in 2024. This indicates an increase of 3% over the previous year, when 2,619 tonnes were collected. July, with 272 tonnes, was the month with the highest volume of glass generation. The rate of glass per inhabitant per year in the municipality was 29 kilos.
