Shadows, details, glances, reflections... Beautiful photographs, which transmit calm and serenity, taken with care, patience and with a different look, that of two women, two Norwegian artists, Joanna Butler and Nina Reistad, who have joined forces in the Mijas Folk museum in a joint exhibition to show the public corners of both their country of origin and their beloved Mijas, a place which, they say, they fell in love with from the very first moment.
"We lived in Mijas Pueblo for ten years, but since the pandemic, we have been living in Norway. Mijas is always in our hearts and for us, both places are beautiful", said the two artists, who live temporarily in both destinations. When the winter and the cold dominate their country, they return to Mijas "to enjoy its pleasant temperature" and its people, because, as Butler said at the opening of the exhibition on Friday 17th, "the people of Mijas are people who have something special".
For the artist Joana Butler, whose photos are mainly focused on Mijas Pueblo, the Barrio Santana is her favourite spot: "El Barrio has soul. The neighbours know each other, which is unusual nowadays, and they even know me. They are people who have a real life. I feel at home in El Barrio. I am in love with Mijas and I always want to come back", she confessed.
Details
"Our photographs show details and places from both countries. Small and beautiful pieces that capture our attention. Like the beautiful shapes and natural colours in the ice or the old paint peeling off a wooden door, the shadows and reflections created by the sun, a white sheet covering something and the detailed weaving of electrical wires on a wall, and how the streets look so different in the fog and rain. Details that are often overlooked in everyday activities", said the authors of the snapshots on an information panel accompanying the exhibition.
So much detail can be seen in the photographs that the public is captivated. "I think it's a very original vision of Mijas and corners of Norway. There are photos that are so incredible that they look like paintings but they are photos. They are very special and interesting", said José Angulo, an artisan from Mijas who attended the exhibition.
An open municipality
The councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP) attended the opening. "They are two Norwegian residents who love Mijas and who wanted to share with us their photographs, some of them focused on Mijas and others on Norway. They make a perfect mix of what Mijas means: an open municipality, where we give opportunities to everyone. In this case, Norway and Mijas go hand in hand and from Culture we are delighted to give them this opportunity to disseminate the work that these two artists have done", said the councillor.
In love with Mijas
This is not the first time that Joanna Butler and Nina Reistad have exhibited in Mijas and, once again, they are happy to do it. "We immediately accepted the invitation to exhibit at the Folk Museum. As we have already exhibited here several times in the last 10 or 12 years, it is like coming home. It is a joy to come back and meet friends and the wonderful people of Mijas", they said.
