Last year they dealt with 9,580 enquiries in person, 7,310 telephone calls and 11,340 e-mails

For forty years, the Mijas Town Hall has had a Foreigners Department responsible for dealing with enquiries from foreign residents and visitors. It was the first service of its kind to be set up in Spain and since then it has established itself as a reference point for foreigners. Proof of this is that in 2024 this municipal service responded to a total of 28,230 enquiries of all kinds.

As explained by the department, the number of enquiries has been increasing every year due to the rise in the number of foreign residents settling in the city. Thus, in 2024, 9,580 enquiries were processed in person, 7,310 via telephone calls and 11,340 by email.

The most common issues dealt with include tax matters, such as the payment of taxes and fees, direct debits and instalments; registration and de-registration of inhabitants, as well as census certificates; those related to the NIE and immigration procedures, with particular emphasis on the permits for citizens from the United Kingdom; digital certificate and proof of international life; translations of texts; interpretation services for women victims of gender violence; and more general issues related to urban planning, social services or the Andalusian Health Service, among others.

In addition, and related to citizen care, information sheets on municipal and general topics are available in English and German and are updated on a continuous basis. The Department also has its own mailing list where more than 5,000 foreigners, communities of owners and social associations have registered for information in English and Spanish.

But the work of the department does not end there, as it also organises all kinds of activities, such as informative talks, initiatives in collaboration with clubs and associations, the development of an international trade fair, collaborative activities and meetings with consulates, language exchange workshops and the coordination of the Viogenex working group to assist foreign victims of gender-based violence.

"Bearing in mind that a third of the population living in Mijas is of foreign origin, this municipal department does essential work in providing information and answering enquiries. We will continue to work to ensure that the foreign population continues to be attended to quickly and efficiently", explained the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP).
