Tourism presents the next exhibitions of artisans in the office of Mijas Pueblo

  • The Mijas Craft Association programmes various exhibitions until summer, where we can see ceramics, jewellery, fashion and silverware
  • Los artesanos expositores junto al edil de Turismo, Francisco Jerez, este viernes en la presentación.

The first exhibition, in February, will show the work of Fatima Chbihi and María José Calvente

The Mijas Craft Association, in collaboration with the Tourism Department, presents the next exhibitions that will be open to the public in the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office. The closest in the calendar is that of Fatima Chbihi, who makes jewellery, and María José Calvente, who carries out her professional work in a flamenco dressmaking shop. "What we do at the Tourist Office is to give artisans the opportunity to exhibit in this space. A lot of people come to this Tourist Office and they look at these pieces, which they can then purchase", explained the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), adding that “this initiative benefits both the tourist and the artisan”.

This is an opportunity for the artisans to showcase their work and they are very happy about it. One of them, the ceramist María Vega, who is known for making pieces that are "useful", said that "I find this initiative very interesting, and the fact that it is here in the office is very good because it has a lot of visibility. I am very happy to be able to participate". His partner in the association, Alberto Martín, whose work is the construction of acoustic and electric Spanish guitars and the repair of stringed instruments, added that "I think it's great that the Town Hall is supporting its people and providing this space. That's the best thing. Also, I think that craftwork is going to be the real luxury of the 21st century. Everything that is handmade is unique".

The works

After the exhibition of Fatima and María José next February, in March the guitar maker Alberto Martín will show his works; in April the ceramist Encarga G. Bravo and the silversmith Cristóbal Angulo; and in June the jeweller Mayka Hernández and the ceramist María Vega. Some of them told us what we are going to see in this office.

"We are going to bring a set of chiselled jewellery that I make with my son, and also as it coincides with Holy Week and I work, among other things, in religious silverware, I will also bring some outstanding pieces of the things I make for Holy Week", said Cristóbal Angulo, another artisan who will be exhibiting. For her part, Fatima Chbihi, said that "when I started in the world of jewellery, almost 29 years ago, I never thought that I was going to become a jeweller, but thank God I have been here in Mijas for thirteen years now, making jewellery. I started with fine costume jewellery and now I am making jewellery with metals such as silver, and I am really happy".

Among the works on display are jewellery, ceramics, kitchen utensils, flamenco fashion and silverware. These exhibitions can be visited from Monday to Friday from 9 to 18 hours and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 to 14 hours. There is no better souvenir to take home than a handmade piece of work.
