The area around Los Arenales became an oasis of activity and hope on Sunday 12th with a new repopulation of indigenous vegetation. Around 50 people took part in this initiative, organised by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in collaboration with the Town Hall, to bring life back to an area affected by fire.
The coordinator of WWF Málaga, Claudia Perlini, explained that it is "a site that was affected by a fire a couple of years ago. We have left the land to rest for a while so that it can recover on its own and now we are starting with the Town Hall and the Environment group to reforest this burnt area with indigenous plants".
The Environment technician, Juan Luis Vega, explained that "the reforestation aims to create a mixed forest with holm oaks and other shrubs such as aladierno, mastic and juniper. This long-term project includes further planting and control operations to ensure that the plants take root and thrive".
The councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), expressed his gratitude to "these volunteers who gave their time on a Sunday to take care of nature which is everyone's responsibility".
Every entity, institution and person did their bit to care for the environment and raise awareness of its importance. With initiatives like this, Mijas demonstrates its commitment to nature and the community.
