  • The initial project has also undergone some changes to, among other things, reduce water consumption and expand parking areas

Despite its importance, this issue had not been considered by the previous government team, says the local government

The councillor for Works and Infrastructures of the Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), visited on Monday 13th the works of the so-called Gran Parque, located on the El Ahogadero estate in Las Lagunas, whose works are 90 percent completed. During his visit, the councillor reported that the Mijas Town Hall has put out to tender the maintenance service of this new green and leisure area. An issue which, Trella stressed, had not been considered by the previous government team which, in 2023, promoted this initiative.

"We are talking about the comprehensive maintenance of the park, in terms of gardening, cleaning, conservation of the facilities, lighting of the whole area, maintenance of the transformation centres and the water motors, without forgetting the whole security system, which is extremely important due to the extension of this park, which is around 270,000 square metres", explained the councillor, adding that “it is a job that we have had to do from scratch because the previous government team had not foreseen it, despite its importance".

Regarding this maintenance contract, the head of Works and Infrastructures pointed out that it will cost three million euros a year, and will last for three years, "although as time progresses, the government team will study the way to make concessions, either fully or partially, so that these maintenance costs are lower, as each concession will be responsible for maintaining its corresponding service or area".

New additions to the initial project of the Gran Parque

Trella also explained some of the changes that the initial project for this park has undergone. One of them will reduce the water consumption required by this green space, in which more than 2,900 trees will be planted "and we have preferred to change the type of trees to others more typical of our Mediterranean climate, such as olive trees, so that water consumption will drop from 1,350 cubic metres per month to just 350, reducing this consumption by more than 300 percent".

Likewise, actions are being carried out to improve access to this park, as in this first phase, the councillor pointed out, "the creation of bridges that had been planned from the area of the cemetery and Venta La Morena is not going to be included". In this sense, the councillor argued that "what we have done now has been to adapt the entrance road to this park to facilitate access and we have also contemplated a parking for parking space in the area of the cemetery access, with capacity for more than 1,000 vehicles, something that was not considered in the initial project but which is essential, especially if we want many people to come and enjoy this space".

The work on the Gran Parque de la Costa del Sol could be ready by next May, announced Trella, who also recalled that this new infrastructure will offer large walking areas, children's playgrounds, spaces for sports, two lakes and an amphitheatre with seating for more than 1,500 people, among its main attractions.
