For the ninth year running, the restaurant El Torreón in La Cala has been organising its now famous Rice Week. From Monday 28th to Sunday 3rd of November, this restaurant offers a menu at a fixed price, 30 euros. An initiative of its manager, Salvador Gallardo, which also includes a recognition, as each edition is dedicated to an important local personality. This year 2024 the award is for Cristóbal Lozano, a much-loved Mijeño who has worked all his life for the benefit of our community.
As Gallardo said, "I meet with some friends of the El Torreón, and together we propose names until we finally choose the person to be recognised. This year the name Cristobal was the first to come up, and no other proposals were needed".
Cristóbal who was really moved, was honoured by his family, friends and neighbours who wanted to pay tribute to a neighbour who has been, and is, a truly exceptional person. "For me it is an honour. I was delighted. I didn't expect it at my age, but I loved it. I have to thank Salvador and all those who have come to join us", said Lozano.
A pioneer in fair play, serenity and humility in sport, values that are now in vogue, but that not so long ago were not common. Family and friends accompanied him on this special day and said some beautiful words, among them, his granddaughter Daniela who remembered something that Cristobal always says, "playing with the heart is the only way to play".
The work of Cristobal's wife was also recognised in an event that was attended by public representatives of Mijas. The councillor of the government team, Mario Bravo, highlighted the career of Cristóbal Lozano, "a neighbour who in the morning was a teacher in a school and in the afternoon was committed to football. Sport is essential at certain ages, not so much for what it provides, but for what it avoids".
The spokesman of the municipal group PSOE, Josele Gonzalez also recognized the career of the honoree, "his contributions to La Cala and above all to sport".
A recognition to a person who never asked for it. If there was a Golden Ball for kindness, Cristóbal Lozano, for sure, would have won it.
