The international association presented the awards of the third ‘Nurture your Optimism’ contest on Thursday 17th

For the third consecutive year, Soroptimist has awarded the work done by some companies that, according to this group, promote healthy food. On the evening of Thursday 17th of October the Mijas Town Hall hosted the awards ceremony of the third ‘Nourish your Optimism’ contest, which also aims to raise awareness about the improvement of our health, which is increasingly affected by the consumption of fast and plasticised products that terribly damage us.

The president of the collective, Daphne Theunissen, stressed that “little by little, we are not only learning about what we eat but also about how it is produced and about the effects it has on the earth, so, while doing some research on the subject, we thought we should applaud the heroes who are receiving awards here today, as they help us to change our habits and think about what we eat and where each product comes from”.

Soroptimist International, Costa Women, the Department of Foreigners of Mijas, Justicia Alimentaria, Red Cross, Sabor a Málaga and the Aula del Mar Foundation are collaborating in this competition.

Also present was the councillor for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP) who pointed out that “it is very easy to get projects off the ground but it is also true that there are some in which you can see the soul of the people who have worked on it and I think Soroptimist has got it right with these awards, giving them to companies and people who have shown they have soul”. He also wanted to thank this association “for the work they do throughout the year”.

Since June, the group has been collecting proposals from companies and organisations in Malaga, with the following winners in the five categories. In the area of Food Cultivation and Distribution, the award went to the Merkaético Consumer Cooperative; in the next category, Sustainable Production, the award went to the company Maychoco; in the area of Education and Awareness, the work of Bee Garden was recognised; then Soroptimist awarded the prize to the company Extiercol from Ronda in the area of Innovation and Technology; and finally, the award for Sustainable Restaurant went to the Benalmadena business Sollo Restaurante.

The president also stated that “the idea of this competition is to make everyone stop and think for a moment about what we can do to look after our nutrition and the products we consume”.

Finally, Ali Parandeh, a member of ToastMasters, gave a short speech in which he told a story related to climate change and sustainable development.
