Everything is ready for La Cala de Mijas to enjoy in style its most important festivity: the day of St. Teresa de Jesús. "From the Mijas Town Hall we go hand in hand with the Parish and the Asociación Parroquial de Santa Teresa to carry out the celebration of the feast day of the patron saint of La Cala when organizing all the activities,’ said the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), who presented the planned events on Thursday along with the president of the parish group, Belén Guerra, and the treasurer, Alejandro Ortiz.
The big day
On Tuesday 15th of October, the day of Santa Teresa, the traditional mass will take place at 19:30 hours in the parish of Santa Teresa, followed by the expected procession of the statue of the saint through the streets of the La Cala. "We are very excited, very nervous and working hard with the aim of continuing with our traditions so that they are never lost", added Guerra.
The Asociación Parroquial de Santa Teresa is appealing to the men of the throne "to accompany us to take our saint out into the streets. We need around 20 bearers, mainly men, as is the tradition, but if necessary, women are also welcome. What we want is that Santa Teresa can go out in procession", said the president of the group. The only requirement, she specified, is to comply with the agreed dress code for the procession: black trousers and a white shirt.
Bringing back traditions
The great novelty of the events organised on the occasion of the feast day of Santa Teresa is "that we are going to recover the celebration of the 'verbena' of Santa Teresa. Many residents were asking us and we have decided to resume it but we are going to do it in a different place", said Silvia Marín. The 'verbena', which will be held on Saturday 19th, will not take place on the boulevard as in previous editions, but will be moved to Los Olivos park, starting at 19:00 hours. "There will be dancing, live music, a 'candelaria', to enjoy a night of pilgrimage, among other activities. We want people to come and enjoy, which is what it is all about".
Pilgrimage in honour of Santa Teresa
Finally, on Sunday 20th, the pilgrimage in honour of Santa Teresa will take place. At 11 hours a holy mass will be celebrated in the La Cala parish church, after which the pilgrims will make their way to Los Olivos park. In this case, it is traditionally women, dressed as ‘romeras’ or ‘faralaes’, who carry the religious float. "After enjoying the walk, once in Los Olivos park, the Town Hall will offer paella for those attending and the Santa Teresa association will be in charge of the bar", said Marín.
"The purpose of working at the bar is to raise funds to restore the float of the Virgin", said Guerra. In addition, to encourage everyone to participate in the festivities, said Ortiz, "this year we are going to decorate the streets of the town with pennants and photographs of Santa Teresa, to decorate the streets and invite the neighbours to join in". They have also made Santa Teresa bracelets for anyone who wants to buy them and raise more funds for the association.
In short, and hoping that the weather is good, everything is ready in La Cala to enjoy its big day: the feast of Santa Teresa, patron saint of all Caleños.
