The Western Costa del Sol has reduced the water limit to 200 litres per inhabitant per day as it continues to be in a situation of exceptional drought with severe scarcity. This was decided today by the Drought Commission of the hydrographical area of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins, made up of representatives of the Junta de Andalucía, users and business, trade union and environmental organisations. At the meeting held in Malaga to analyse the hydrological situation of the area, this measure was approved in order to guarantee human supply and mitigate the social, environmental and economic impacts of the drought.

This region, which includes the municipalities of Torremolinos, Mijas, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Ojén, Istán, Benahavís and Casares, will continue, after analysing the evolution of the indicators and the current hydrological situation in the area, in a situation of exceptional drought with severe shortages, but the supply of litres per inhabitant per day will fall from 225 litres, the figure established by the last drought decree, to 200 litres. 

Exceptional measures

As for the exceptional measures authorised by the Junta de Andalucía, such as the refilling of swimming pools and survival irrigation during the summer, they will remain in force, as decided at the meeting, as long as the maximum amount set is not exceeded in the Mancomunidad of the Western Costa del Sol. Thus, public swimming pools are authorised; as for private swimming pools, they must have a water recirculation system so that water is used in the essential quantities to replace water losses due to evaporation, filter cleaning and to guarantee the sanitary quality of the water. 

In the case of irrigation of green areas, it will be carried out with water that is not suitable for human consumption, when this type of resource is available, and using it to the maximum extent possible. In addition, the increase in the maximum volume of water used to irrigate green areas continues to be authorised when there are species of special botanical interest and there is no regenerated or phreatic water available.

Control

Acosol will continue to carry out a permanent review and control of consumption to ensure that it complies with the 200 litres per inhabitant per day, and measures will be implemented in agreement with the town halls of the Western Costa del Sol if necessary. Likewise, the public water company will continue to carry out an exhaustive control of consumption to ensure that the amounts per inhabitant per day are met, as well as regulating the pressure of drinking water in a sectorised manner according to territory in order to reduce water losses and thus achieve efficient consumption.
