Mayors, councillors and technicians from 30 municipalities in the metropolitan area of Malaga participated this week in the Malaga Global Metropolis Forum, conceived by the Ciedes Foundation as a meeting point to face challenges and priority issues that must be addressed jointly on issues such as water, mobility, municipal financing or land availability. After the first constitutive session held on the 5th of September 2023 and the second and third monographic sessions on the integral water cycle, which took place on the 7th of February and the 2nd of July, the fourth session was held on Wednesday 18th at Malaga Town Hall, in which issues related to mobility were addressed. Specifically, proposals were discussed to modernise transport systems and infrastructures, promote sustainable mobility, strengthen network communication and the commitment to sustainable public transport. 

 

The delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in the province, Patricia Navarro, took part in the forum together with technicians, mobility experts and mayors, including the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).  “This forum is important to take measures together, to create working committees, technical, but also political, where we can all discuss the problems that need to be addressed and, in this sense, provide solutions”, she said.

 

The mayoress of Mijas, together with other mayors, supported the coastal train as a possible solution to the problems addressed. “One of the claims that we have been making from the Town Hall is the need for the coastal train, which is so needed in Mijas, as it is the third largest municipality in the province and has no railway connection”, she added.

Liberalisation of the motorway

The liberalisation of the motorway and the promotion of public transport are other proposals of the mayoress of Mijas in this regard. “We continue to demand through the Provincial Consortium for the bus service to be more frequent. The establishment of bus-VAO lanes has been analysed here so that these vehicles are prioritised in order to facilitate transport to both Marbella and Malaga”, stressed the mayoress. Mata also pointed out that the creation of new infrastructures is of paramount importance: “Mijas is a municipality undergoing a great development and development will come to a standstill if the necessary infrastructure works are not undertaken with regard to  mobility”.
