The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, visited on Friday 16th the Sierra de Mijas and announced that, after the serious fire that affected the area en 2022, the land in now ready for reforestation.
During his visit, the president called for prudence and pointed out that 95% of the forest fires that occur in Andalusia are caused by man. As he said, "if human beings were much more responsible, prudent and careful during their presence in public spaces and mountains, there would be 90% fewer fires". He also pointed out that the average number of fires registered in Andalusia has been reduced by more than 20% compared to the average for the last ten years, and specified that so far this year there have been "372 interventions compared to the 500 on average that there are normally at this time of year".

Juanma Moreno also assured that Andalusia has the most well-prepared anti-fire system with the most resources in the whole country and thanked the Infoca workers for their ability to respond, for their work and for their dedication. In 2024, the number of fire-fighting vehicles has increased by 15%, in addition to 244 aircraft, including planes and helicopters and 2,700 professionals.

During the visit of the president, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, announced that the town will allocate 1,250,000 euros to a plan to protect the Sierra de Mijas from possible fires, and reported that work is already underway on the specifications for a contract that will be in force for five years. Mata also announced the main actions contemplated in the contract, "which include clearing and cutting down trees in poor condition, all of this while preserving the fauna and flora of the Mountains"
This work will be carried out over a period of eight months, from October to May. The mayoress emphasised that the Mijas Town Hall"had never implemented an intervention of this type before" and added that "the government team is firmly committed to preserving the mountain range".
On the other hand, the mayoress pointed out that in order to fight forest fires, "the involvement and joint work of all the institutions is essential and necessar".
