Plastic continues to be the most collected waste on the Costa del Sol coastline

  • Todas las embarcaciones trabajan de lunes a domingo y los días festivos. El horario se establece desde las 08:00 horas a las 16:00 horas.

This material represents more than 85% of the waste collected from sea

According to a press release, the boats that the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental deployed along the Costa del Sol coastline collected a total of 31.64 cubic metres of waste during the month of July, of which more than 85 percent, to be precise 85.11 percent (representing 26.93 m3), corresponds to plastics, according to data provided by the company providing the service.

In this respect, Manuel Cardeña, president of the Mancomunidad, has once again appealed to citizens to take extreme care of the environment, "since, obviously, the plastic that reaches the sea is thrown by us. It is up to all citizens to take care of the environment, and I call on us to be aware that we must be more careful".

The remaining 5.75 m3 were wood, 0.56 m3 algae and 0.32 m3 greasy matter.

Since the coastline cleaning service began, a total of 54.42 cubic metres of waste has been collected, with plastic being the most common element, a total of 44.77 percent, representing 82.27 percent of the total.

The Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol has invested 635,312.15 euros in maintaining the quality of coastal waters in the 2024 season. The service consists in putting into service a total of 15 vessels, 4 on the coast and 11 on the beach, for the collection of floating and semi-submerged solids, as well as hydrocarbons and oleaginous substances. In addition, a system for taking measures to maintain the quality of the

coastal waters of the municipalities of the Mancomunidad has been established. The scope of this service corresponds to the coastline of the following municipalities: Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Casares and Manilva and "these vessels will make a special effort to analyse the water, especially at those points close to the underwater outfalls. This data will be analysed and we will be able to establish strategies and develop techniques to guarantee the best possible quality for the waters of the Costa del Sol coastline", the Mancomunidad points out.

All the boats work from Monday to Sunday and on public holidays from 08:00 to 16:00 hours.
