Dolores Arroyo, also known as Lola, was in charge of the proclamation at an event held next to the Torreón where the poster for the festivities was unveiled

La Cala de Mijas took on a festive atmosphere on Thursday 18th. The Plaza del Torreón was the stage in which Lola Arroyo, from La Cala de Mijas, gave an emotional speech before unveiling the poster for the festivities, a design by Mijas Comunicación, together with the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP). The mayoress applauded Arroyo’s speech and the work that she and her family have done for La Cala: “We are proud to have such an extended family, a family with such deep roots, a family that has made La Cala de Mijas great and that thanks to their contribution, to the effort that your grandparents once made, La Cala is great today”. The commitment that Lola Arroyo has for the seaside town is such that when she found out about becoming the town crier she was “scared and excited”, but she felt that speaking about the fair “was an honour and a reason to be proud”. The town crier went back in time to talk about her grandparents and her family, recalling how La Cala used to be.  “My father, Antonio, also known as ‘el pelón’, and some of my uncles, began carrying sand from the beach with mules for the construction of the first villas, which were beginning to be built on the coast”, she recalled, as she also remembered a manila shawl that her mother bought for her in instalments and which she proudly exhibited during the opening speech as well as her collection of books of the La Cala fairs, the first one from 1974, from half a century ago. That was the beginning of her journey through the La Cala fair, both day and night, with all its complementary activities.

“It has been a long time since La Cala de Mijas Fair had an opening speech and a great fair always has to be preceded by a great proclamation”, added Mata, who considered that La Cala fair “is the fair of all the summer holidaymakers who come to visit us”, but also the fair of “our traditions”: “La Cala de Mijas is the best place to enjoy not only the beaches but also the traditions”, said the mayoress who thanked the the Department for Festivities for elaborating the programme and Mijas Comunicacion for the elaboration of the poster.

The proclamation was preceded by the dances of the UP groups led by Víctor Rojas and during her speech a video was played showing old photos of La Cala, its fair, and the family of the town crier, who was picked up from her home in the Bulevar Caleño and taken to the Plaza del Torreón in a horse-drawn carriage.

After the unveiling of the poster, the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), gave a preview of the programme for the fair, which will close on Sunday 28th of July, accompanied by the festivities board, whom she called to join her on stage. “I would like to thank all of you, the Junta de Festejos, who are helping me to put together this programme for the fair”, she said.

The councillor assured that the aim was to create a programme for all audiences. The 24th will be Children’s Day. That same day will be the inauguration of the artistic lighting at 22:30 hours. The day will be completed by the Contest of King and Queen of the Fair.

On Thursday 25th the Celebratory Dinner for our Elders will be one of the main events. On Friday 26th the daytime fair will get underway at 13:00 hours. In the evening, there will be a performance for children and the election of the children and baby king and queen. At 23 hours there will be a performance by Rock and Roll Star and Jocker Rock Band.

On Saturday 27th there will be a play centre service for children in the morning, popular games, the day fair and performances, while Keen Levy will be performing in the evening. On Sunday 28th Maki and María Artés and Nyno Vargas will perform.
