The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department for Public Roads, is proceeding with the installation of canopies in more than thirty spaces distributed among the three urban areas of the municipality and the sunshades, due to their characteristics, withstand the high temperatures of the municipality that make the provision of such elements necessary. 

The installation of the equipment is being carried out after the awarding of a public contract which will be in force until 2027 and whose value amounts to 862,864.18 euros. The agreement includes the rental, installation, dismantling and maintenance of the canopies in different streets, parks and squares to make these spaces more comfortable in the high temperatures. At the same time, the measure is intended to boost pedestrian traffic in these areas, favouring the use of these spaces.

"We understand that this is a measure to make Mijas a more comfortable town. In addition, we are going to install canopies in commercial and leisure areas so that the heat is not an impediment to enjoy them", explained the councillor for Public Roads, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP). 

 

As specified in the contract, in Mijas Pueblo these shades are being installed in Calle Málaga, Los Caños, Carril, Avenida del Compás, Avenida Virgen de la Peña, Plaza Virgen de la Peña, Plaza de la Libertad and in the playgrounds of Valtocado, Rubén de la Alquería and the Calisthenics playground in Calle Tamisa. 

In Las Lagunas, work is being carried out in the parks of Cala Hills, Olisol, Doña Ermita, 3 de Abril, Victoria Kent, Vicente Aleixandre, Antonio Machado, María Zambrano, Andalucía, Agua, Voluntarios de Protección Civil, Los Molinos, Plaza de La Cala, Lomas del Real, the Calistenia sports track and the children's areas in the Juncal and Candelaria car parks. 

Meanwhile, in La Cala it is being carried out in the streets Marbella, Torremolinos, Butibamba park, El Barco, Los Sentidos-Los Claveles, in the boulevard area and in the branch office square. 

The area covered with shade will increase progressively year after year. Thus, in 2024 there will be 4,921 square metres covered, which will increase to 6,883m2 in the second year, reaching 7,318 in the last two years of the contract. As the councillor indicated, the canopies will be maintained until autumn.
