The Mancomunidad has provided fifteen boats for cleaning the coastline which have been operating since the middle of last month

The boats that the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol has set up along the Costa del Sol coastline have collected a total of 22.75 cubic metres of waste in the second half of June (the service began in the middle of the month).

It should be noted that the volume of plastics collected was 17.81 cubic metres, which represents 78.28 percent of the total. In addition, 1.77 m3 was wood, 1.34 m3 algae and 0.10 m3 grease. In addition, there has been an increase in what is commonly known as "natas", which are in fact microscopic clays in suspension, which are not a threat to health.

In this regard, Manuel Cardeña, president of the Mancomunidad, has appealed to the public to take extreme care of the environment, by not throwing plastic objects into the water or onto the sand "because, after all, caring for the environment is everyone's responsibility", he added.

By municipalities, in Benalmádena a total of 2.57 cubic metres were collected, 0.40 in Casares, 3.21 in Estepona, 3.03 in Fuengirola, 1.57 in Manilva, 6.30 in Marbella, 3.03 in Mijas and 2.57 in Torremolinos.

The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental has invested 635,312.15 euros in maintaining the quality of coastal waters in the 2024 season. The service is made up of 15 boats that collect floating or semi-submerged solids, as well as hydrocarbons and oleaginous substances. In addition, a system to meassuer and maintain the quality of the coastal waters of the municipalities of the Mancomunidad has been established.

The scope of this service corresponds to the coastline of the municipalities of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Casares and Manilva, and these boats will make a special effort to analyse the water, especially at those points close to the sewage pipe. This data will be analysed and we will be able to establish strategies and develop techniques to guarantee the best possible quality for the waters of the Costa del Sol coastline.

All boats work from Monday to Sunday and on public holidays. The opening hours are from 08:00 hours to 16:00 hours.
